The forgeworld pieces I used in building this Lone Wolf were among the very first pieces I bought for my Space Wolf army when I set about their creation in late 2008. He was among the first pieces that were partially painted, and then left to gather dust upon a shelf in his half-finished state. In that sense, he really is a Lone Wolf, setting out to revenge himself on the monsters of the world for his long-term storage in the cabinet.
I recently began repainting old models, and he struck my eye as a model worth putting some extra time into. I hope you enjoy him.
I first painted these guys the week before Astronomicon 2009, in quite a rush. I sat down recently and went back over them, redoing most of their armor, flesh, hair, metals... pretty much the whole damn model. They aren't showpieces, but they are closer to the standard that I'd like my Wolves to be at. Their armament is a bit dated, as I don't run twin plasma pistols in the new codex. I quite liked it in the old codex, but at 15 points a pistol it is a bit price-prohibitive in the current codex.
In front is their Wolf Guard leader, a proven veteran of numerous skirmishes. When I built the model, I tried to give him the air of a scout leader, crouching on a hill looking down on his foes. I believe I failed, as the most common comment I get is "haha his powerfist is too heavy for him!"
I gave him honor marks on his powerfist and right shoulderpad. Really its incentive for him to continue beating the crap out of Techmarines and Vindicators, something that he has recently shown a talent for.
Hey guys, I decided I'd post an in progress list that I'm thinking about bringing to OFCC. Its a slightly changed list from what I've been playing the last couple weeks.
Things I learned from my last few games: - Fenrisian wolves on the Lone Wolf were usually pretty lackluster for 10 pts each. - Grey Hunters with Power Weapons were usually not very effective. 15 pts for 2 or 3 power weapon attacks at Str 4... - Predators are good, but not good enough that I wanted two consistently. I wanted Str 8+ firepower. - Razorbacks are fun, but I found myself wanting them to have a more powerful weapon. I added Las/plas turrets. - While the wolf claw was nice on the scouts Wolf Guard, I found myself wanting a powerfist to deal with rear armor 11 tanks. Cheaper than meltabombs for everyone. - The two Thunderwolf Cavalry units of one model each often died to silly things by attracting attention. I dropped one to upgrade the razorbacks, hopefully making the other more likely to be ignored. He is a bully, not a bruiser, picking on small marine units and lonely vehicles.
So, I had a lot of melee power, backed up by some nice ranged shots (mostly Str 5, with some Str 8). Now, I have good melee power, but significantly higher str and quantity of shots. I'm looking forward to trying it again.
